Research shows that children learn through sensory play and exploration. This camp will provide a sensory-rich environment for all children to encourage the development of age appropriate sensory processing skills, motor skills, and social skills. Camp is sure to be loads of sensory fun and social enrichment as children
Learn to Explore And Play In Nature (LEAP IN)!

Program Details

All campers will participate in structured hands on tasks that promote developmental skills, but the unique difference about LEAP IN is that campers will have plenty of opportunity for unstructured and child directed play. They will have the chance to gravitate towards what their bodies needs to fulfill their sensory needs in well thought out centers placed in nature. They will step out of their comfort zone, develop higher level critical thinking, work cooperatively with others to develop social skills, all while in their natural environment. Camp LEAP IN is structured so multi-aged children work cooperatively together and activities are differentiated based on age and developmental level.

Week 1: Monsters in the Muck (ages 5-12)
Do you like adventures? Exploring monsters in the muck? Or perhaps it is toxic sludge or slime? Come to Camp LEAP In to create the monsters you imagine in your mind. The sky is the limit! A variety of materials will be provided for you to create on your own and as a team as you explore monster madness while having the opportunities to fulfill all of your sensory needs!

Week 2: Buggin' Out! (ages 5-12)
Get ready to move and groove in nature! Can you hop like a grasshopper, fly like a butterfly, crawl like a caterpillar, and march like an ant? Can you do this while navigating an obstacle course in, out, above, around, below, behind, between, on, and over in the woods while working with your peers? Fly through the trees while suspended from a swing! They will have hands on opportunities to explore bugs in nature and their habitats that are at their fingertips by picking up large rocks and rolling over logs.

Week 3: Wild in the Woods (ages 5-12)
Escape to the land of the wild things where you can play and run free! What creatures can you find and learn about? Use your imagination to create your own habitats and go on an adventure where you get to lead and explore in nature at your fingertips.

Week 4: Hands on Nature: Anything Goes! (ages 5-12)
Hands on Nature is designed to connect children to the natural world and experience nature's wonders first hand. Let's get down and dirty and wet and wild as we use our imaginations and senses to paint, build, construct, and sculpt our way through nature's sensory playground! Anything goes this week as you fulfill your sensory needs to PLAY!

Camp LEAP IN is designed to be an inclusive camp for all children that are both in regular education programs, as well special education programs. Curriculum was created with children in mind to include children with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing deficits. Based on the camp to staff ratio, children must be independent with their daily living skills to include toileting, dressing, and feeding. Children must be independently verbal to participate in the camp activities and benefit most from the social programming. Children must be able to follow simple directions in a group. Camp LEAP IN may require follow up information or assessment to ensure that each camper can get the most out of their camp experience and to ensure the safety for all campers and staff under this model. Completion of registration does not guarantee a spot for your camper.

Camp LEAP IN believes that EVERY child can benefit from our programming, therefore, it is our goal to create a few spaces each week that will give an opportunity for a camper that may not have all of the above the skills. If you feel that you have a child that has not yet developed all of the above skills, please reach out to us so we can discuss if we are able to meet your child's needs. Camp LEAP IN may require follow up information or assessment to ensure that each camper can get the most out of their camp experience and to ensure the safety for all campers and staff under this model. Sensory: We will work to integrate the senses (Tactile, Vestibular, Proprioception, Olfactory, Vision, Auditory, and Taste) in natural ways such as walking on logs as balance beams, splashing and jumping in mud puddles, heavy work digging in the mud, swinging in swings with wind blowing in our faces, jumping of stumps, rolling down grassy hills, walking over crunchy leaves, and hauling large branches and wood to build. These activities will be encouraged through imaginative play schemes. The children will have the opportunity to seek out what their body needs and direct this to be in the optimal state to participate in other activities. The environment will be equipped with a variety of tools to facilitate all of the senses such as hammocks, swings, tents, slack lines, and alternative seating. Nature in and of itself, is the best sensory playground!

Gross Motor: Immersion in nature will focus on the development of large muscle coordination, core strength, and body awareness needed to motor plan and problem solve building of obstacle courses and other play schemes.

Fine Motor and Perceptual Motor Activities: We will address the tactile and touch systems and the use of two hands together to build and construct. We will facilitate the development of mature patterns of grasping tools to complete nature art and to pick up and manipulate multi-sensory materials a variety of shapes and sizes. We work on developing the right amount of force needed to work with items in nature to play. Hanging from branches will develop grip and strength. The placement of art supplies encourages children to interact in nature.

Language: As the children use their bodies to engage in nature, language rich vocabulary and concepts will be taught in the environment where language naturally occurs. Children will be taught conceptual language and will be using targeted vocabulary to expand their language skills and concepts incorporated into play schemes. Children will work on following directions and using expanded sentence structure as they play, work, and most importantly have fun as they LEAP IN. (Learn Explore and Play In Nature)!

Social/Emotional Development: The tools that we use to facilitate this domain include but are not limited to Michelle Garcia Winter "Social Thinking", Becky Bailey "Conscious Discipline" and Leah M. Kuypers "Zones of Regulation" We will focus on and facilitate reciprocal and interactive play. Children will work on problem solving as they work as a team with others to create, build, and play in nature with multi-sensory materials. Skills that will be encouraged and addressed "in the moment" include: being demanding, compromising, transitioning, sharing, listening to others ideas, taking turns, waiting one's turn, and addressing anxieties that may be present with trying new things or new sensory experiences. Camp LEAP IN is a safe place for children to experience all levels of feeling and emotion, as their words always have power. We are equipped to identify appropriate ways to handle and cope with the behaviors and emotions that will surface while working in groups with others.
